S. Beth Atkin is one of America's foremost authorities on social issues affecting today's youth. Through her talent as a photojournalist and her uncanny ability to connect with teenagers, Atkin has produced several authoritative and award-winning books. Her most recent book, Gunstories: Life-Changing Experiences with Guns, (HarperCollins, 2006) presents both sides of the gun issue through interviews and photographs with teenagers (www.gunstories.com). According to the School Library Journal, "Atkin's often artful photographs personalize the tragedies of those who have suffered and reveal something of the hopes of teens to whom guns are seen as tools for good."

Atkin is also the author of Voices from the Streets: Young Former Gang Members Tell Their Stories (Little, Brown, 1996), which documents (in interviews, photographs and writings) ex-gang members who find ways to improve their lives and help others through the aid of mentors and intervention programs. Her previous book, Voices from the Fields: Children of Migrant Farmworkers Tell Their Stories illustrates the difficulties of migrant life and how teens succeed in leaving a life of working in the fields.

Portions of text and photos from Atkin's books have been used in newspapers, magazines, anthologies, textbooks, educational CD's and videos. She has received many awards, including: ALA's Best Books for Young Adults; Hungry Mind Review; Children's Books of Distinction: American Booksellers Association: Pick of the List; and Booklist: Editor's Choice.

Atkin is a graduate of Barnard College and started a career as a photographer while assisting on photo shoots for publications such as Time, Life, Sports Illustrated, and Smithsonian. Her current clients include: Houghton-Mifflin, The Pebble Beach Company, The Nation, San Francisco Chronicle, University of California, NYNEX, and Cycle World. She has been a visiting fellow at UC Berkeley's Institute of International Studies and will be a Regent's Lecturer at UCLA in 2007.
